  • Considering that Dear Old Dad was successfully gifted last night, I suppose it's safe to write this review since the puss is not only out of the bag, he's smacking around a toy mouse while high on catnip. Mom told me that Dad -- a born and bred South Sider from the years prior to gentrification -- wanted a gift certificate from Bloom Cigar Company being that's he's been a stogie fan since he was a young man, before it became hip. When we found the place, a private party was going on. A woman at the door told me there was a $10 cover charge, and aside from the errr...curious presence of a few provocatively-dressed young ladies (strippers? escorts?) lounging in the laps of well-fed middle aged men wedged in couches, there were no women. Feeling that Kay would be uncomfortable in this jook joint, I had her stay outside once I was allowed in by someone after explaining my intended purchase. After buying the gift certificate (the 'cashier' found it amusing), I left and smelled like blunt vapors, coughing like Tony Iommi did at the beginning of Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf." Christ Almighty... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zay8kCgci2E They sure have a warehouse fulla blizzies, though, so if you're an aficionado, come and light one up... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3YtvuZ2-I0 Eh, I'll give 'em credit for squattin'. Someone's gotta keep some character intact in this yuppie-overrun neighborhood, but I will openly admit that Bloom's ain't my bag. P.S. The inside of this house of ill-repute looks like your crazy, 60-something uncle's apartment -- the one that never married, gave you your first beer at age 9, let you drive around his car when you were in middle school, and whom the rest of the family only whispers about. P.P.S. Do I even have any business reviewing a business such as this? You tell me. My 3 star rating is for what it is, and I am certainly not a fan. Kay told me I should have hit up a cigar shop at Station Square or Robinson Mall, but this is what Dad wanted... P.P.P.S. Personally, I think Old Allegheny Shoppe in the South Hills is the best store around the metro area for non-smokers who want to buy presents for the smokers they care about. I don't advise going on a Saturday afternoon if you must buy something for someone here.
