  • Two nights ago my boyfriend and I called in to see if they could help us with my two rats that were having upper respiratory problems. They were very welcoming from the start, and assured us that they would be able to see them. When we arrived we were greeted by Riley, who was very sweet to us, and took our Smith and Wesson straight back to the oxygenated holding area where they could be examined. We then met Jennifer, who showed us to a room we could wait in while the Dr. gave her exams. She was very reassuring and asked if we needed anything. When Dr. Wangen came in, she was very straightforward with us, but in a kind way. There was nothing brusque in her manners, she was very kind. She informed us that our Wesson really only have a very minimal chance at survival, but that Smith would most likely be OK with medication. She gave us some estimates for treatment plans, and then some time to discuss our options and how we wanted to proceed. We did decide that it was time to let Wesson go, that he was suffering too much, and there was no real chance at him having viable and enjoyable life. Dr. Wangen and Jennifer were very sympathetic, and explained everything that they would do. They brought both Smith and Wesson to us so that we could all say goodbye. Jennifer told us that when we were ready to let them know, because there was no rush. Which I greatly appreciated. When it was time, they let us stay with him and allowed me to hold him and pet him as he drifted off to sleep peacefully and gently with the gas. Then the medicine was administered and soon after he was gone. Both Dr. Wangen and Jennifer allowed us to be with him for as long as we needed after to say goodbye again, and then when we were ready she explained all of Smith's medications and let us out. We have 4 dogs, a ferret, and now only one rat, but I can safely say that if any of them had an emergency overnight that is is the only place I would take them. The were so kind and loving with our little ones, and did everything they could to ensure we were comfortable during the whole process. A huge thank you to The Scottsdale Veterinary Clinic, especially to Riley, Jennifer and Dr. Wangen. Thank you for your compassion, and willingness to help!
