| - Spending a night at the Global Village Backpackers is one of my Top 5 regrets in life. I was on a budget and due to poor planning, Global Village Backpackers was the only hostel with a bed available on a Saturday night.
I received a pillow in yellow condition, but I believe it was white at some point in its life.
The bunkbeds were narrow and there was no guardrail for the top bunk. There were three bunkbeds per room, leaving very little space to maneuver around.
The outlets in my room did not provide power.
The furniture was old and there were lots of stains everywhere in the room. Very shoddy environment, from the common room to the bathrooms to the bar to the stair path leading to the rooms. If you cannot tolerate dirty atmospheres, do not come to this hostel!
I fortunately escaped without bedbugs but be aware of this serious issue that everyone else has complained about.
The staff appeared to be friendly and tried to be helpful, but were incompetent. They seemed to be more interested in playing loud music at the front desk. Linens and towels were not folded and ready to be distributed when I checked in, a sign of procrastination, with an excuse that they had been backed up by the overwhelming amount of guests booking rooms.
The bar is open to outside people, so you may find bar hoppers looking for cheap drink here. It was interesting to constantly find random drunk people showing up in the Global Village Backpackers lobby and bar. A card key is required to access the guest rooms, so there is no worry that random strangers show up in the rooms. However, the random people were very loud and crazy.
The guests in my dorm room (6 people) were interesting. A guy came back at 3am and talked on his phone until 4am while the lights were off. Another guy kept waking up to open his luggage zipper for an unidentified reason. Two other guys were non-stop snoring for the entire night. One guy came back from the bar at 3:30am with heavy alcohol stench. If you are coming solo, you might run into similar people in your room. The crowd includes travelers in their 20s and 30s.
There were no fans or air conditioning in the room. You have to open the window to get any circulation. Unfortunately, you don't just get air, but you also get extremely loud noises from belligerent drunk people screaming on King Street. The constant shouting of crazy people on the streets kept me up all night. If you are a light sleeper, be aware that it is difficult to get any sleep at Global Village.
Renovations to the facilities and improvements to the hygiene at Global Village are required to justify paying $27/night here. If you are seeking a reliable and clean hostel in the downtown Toronto area for about $30-35/night, I would suggest the Planet Traveler.
