  • I am on the fence as to whether I go with a 2star on this review or a 3. THIS is when I wish there were half stars! It's not quite a 3 and yet not as low as a 2. Oh well, I digress. You get my point, I am sure. If not, you likely may after you read my review. I had this place bookmarked in my handy dandy Yelp bookmarks for months as places I needed to try. Being from the coast of Nor Californ I A , I crave , YEARN for seafood. Last weekend my hubby and I opted for King's Fish House over another seafood place that is also on our bookmarks and more towards his office because it looked fun and lively and the menu looked good. We were also in the neighborhood. I was on the fence with what to order once I saw the Filet and South African Lobster. Again, being picky, as I notably am, I asked the waitress about the lobster and the size of the filet. She could not give me sizes on either, rather, 'It's good size and the lobster is, BIG'. Okay. That's relative. I just did a hike with my husband and I were hungry! I also asked about the Shrimp and Crab Louie, again, one of those things I LOVE from home. Same answer, "It's BIG!" Clearly our waitress was excited about the menu and thats a good thing! She can't make my mind up, so I went with the Filet and Lobster. My husband ordered the Oysters Rockefeller. They seem to be prepared differently everywhere that we travel or dine, which is a lot and all over. Did I love these? No. It wasn't the oyster. It was the sauce. It was lemony and just had a strange consistency and looked odd to me. I could not get past that. I let my husband have at it. The next course that I had was the Clam Chowder. Loved it! It was lukewarm but was still so good. Again, being from just north of SF, the bar is set pretty high for clam chowder and this was very good. We asked for bread, a) because I feel clam chowder HAS to have good bread with it!, and b) we saw it on other guests table..Envy! Oh! Did I mention and can one tell from this review that my husband and I were HANGRY !! this particular night?! We finally flagged our waitress down for the bread and she explained that she didn't understand what was up with the kitchen and , 'they seemed to be out of it and it appeared that they were baking more'. I also asked about that glass of Pinot Noir that I had ordered. She looked a little confused but got it. Now our dinner arrives. When I have any steak anywhere, I always check the done-ness of it first, because at times, its over done. This would be one of those times. This was more like medium to done in the center and no pink on the edges. The filet was also not juicy. Was it 'good sized' , as she claimed when I initially asked? No. This is where I always have an issue as a customer: DO I say anything? I mean, she seems busy! Am I being high maintenance? I've already asked for the bread; requested the late Pinot! NOW the filet is off! THEN as a Yelper, I leave a review and someone then messages me, or has and says , "Hey! Did you let the waitress know?" In this case, my husband says, " That is a $45. meal. We are telling her." The lobster was good. Not great. It was good. Maybe the food had sat for a few before she could get it to us? It happens on busy nights! I waitressed back in the day in college! I know how it goes! So she comes and we explain. She states that she will see if she can re-do it and a few minutes later she comes back to say they are re-doing a steak for me. Several minutes later, as my husband is pretty much done with his meal and I have finished most of my lobster and now down to the part of what is a baked potato that isn't fully done... (not raw, but not cooked enough to eat), out comes another filet with a different person who asks me to cut into it while she watches. I cut into the middle and it doesn't look medium rare either , but it did look juicer and hot. I do not want to deal with this all evening and I am pretty much over it at this point. She walks away and the same thing. This time the edges of the steak were even more done than the first! I would not think this is that difficult! I've cooked filets at home; its simple to get a medium rare steak! As I said, I was over trying to get it correct at that point. I did like what was cooked of the baked potato! I probably didn't need the entire thing anyway, as it was pretty big! The Sautéed Spinach side was cooked perfectly and I took that home after being full and added it to my eggs the next day. The Pinot was good, as well and the waitress, she totally tried! She was cheerful to the end with us! We thought she was great! Now the bus girl cleaning the table behind us who spilled water and then said, "OH SH*&! " in a whispering voice; Well. We heard that and that's probably not okay! The decor was nice and the patio seemed fun. We also liked being able to call ahead and get a reservation with no issues. See, it's not all bad. Would I come back? Probably not. Back to my bookmarks!
