| - I moved to Pittsburgh from out of state, and immediately set about trying to find a comic shop to patronize. I had some less-than-good experiences; typically, I got the outsider treatment from stores I tried, and never felt welcome. I almost gave up before giving the area's LCSs one more shot. I found Duncan Comics on google and made the short trek up Perrysville Hwy.
From my very first visit, Tom was welcoming, helpful, and glad to chat with a comic fan. He is also knowledgeable, and can probably have a good conversation about any comic you like, and many other topics too boot. I have seen him engage with many customers, from a tentative first timer buying one comic to regulars buying stacks every week, and they are all treated as valued visitors. In the 6 months or so I have been visiting the store, this has been consistent.
I set up my pull list here, and Tom is diligent and accurate in filling it. He always has good variant covers available and is also good about recommending or pulling things he thinks I will like. His prices for variants and back issues are fair, and he also has toys and other memorabilia. The store also carries sci-fi and fantasy used books, and they help the store give a sort of Geek's paradise vibe - at every corner is a cool book, comic cover, or toy. The store has a lot of character, and the vibe extends to most of the customers, who are always glad to join conversations. If you place a high premium on customer service and attention to the needs of the customer, this store is a must-visit.
