| - Bill Spoons is one of the best BBQ places I've ever eaten. MAYBE the best. I dunno. I like all kinds of bbq and I'd hate to have to pick one to like forever. Plus I miss Andy Nelson's horribly... but I digress.
I eat at Bill's every chance I get - which is once every other year or so, because the only time I'm in Charlotte is when I'm visiting family for the Holidays, and they've been known to go on vacation between Christmas and New Years.
Chopped pork? I don't know how they do it but their chopped pork has, North Carolina vinegar sauce and all, more meat flavor than just about any I've tasted anywhere else. They've got a bottle of hot pepper vinegar sauce (delicious) and a squeeze-bottle of regular sweet BBQ sauce (good but unnecessary) on each table. Other meats I've tried are the BBQ chicken and the fried flounder. The chicken is delicious, they use a similar sauce on it that they do on the ribs. The white meat can get dry which doesn't bother me, but dry chicken frowners should probably stick to dark. The flounder was as good as I've had anywhere (not that as a northerner I often get fried flounder). They've just added ribs, and based on the one bite I got, I'm going to have to find an excuse to get back down there and try them for myself.
Sides... I love the potatoes, especially if you get there late and they've been soaking in that sauce for a while. The Brunswick stew is a hearty meat&vegetable type one. The collards are delicious - they actually still taste like greens rather than having been salted to death like so many place's collards.
Portion size? Well, I got a large BBQ plate, ate myself sick, and had enough left over for breakfast the next day.
Only had room for dessert once while being down there, it was a slice of sweet potato pie - very good.
Service? Never had a bad experience with anyone in there. Everyone's smiling and friendly.
