  • Camelback is a short but challenging hike in the middle of Phoenix. Parking can be painful on Saturday and Sunday if you don't get there shortly after sunrise til about 9am in the summer months due to how quickly it heats up. You definitely need at least 1L of water if not more when climbing this in the summer months and less in the winter months. Echo Canyon is about 1.15 miles long with an ascent of about 1200 feet. For people in moderate shape, expect to take 45 minutes to get up and I've heard of some people making it to the top in as little as 22 minutes. The hike itself is pretty challenging and is a constant uphill battle walking on boulders and there are a couple false summits towards the end as well! If you go between may-september I would recommend not going after 11am since it's easily in the high 90's if not 100+. The view at the top is pretty nice as you get a 360 degree view of the valley. Cholla is the other side of camelback and is somewhat easier than echo Canyon and slightly longer, but there are a few areas where there are sheer drops that may be harder to navigate when you approach the summit. Otherwise the Cholla side is mostly a flat hike with a gentle ascent whereas you will constantly climbing up rocks and boulders on the echo Canyon side, I personally prefer echo Canyon more since I feel that it is safer than Cholla!
