  • My husband and I purchased a used '11 Jeep Liberty at Kelly in 2013. That visit was bad: 90 minute wait to even talk to someone, warranty sales pressure (a joke), the salesman acting like he was doing us a favor, etc. But we came back. We had an appointment with Ashley to go look at the Jeep Renegade but had no intent on purchasing. We had Chysler Capital pre-approval for funding emailed directly to the dealership to let them know we were able to buy but I said we just wanted to test drive. It is a dark, rainy night but we are on time for our appointment. Ashley greeted us and sat us down at her desk. She then walked away for 20+ minutes to sit down with customers who walked in after us. We were obviously not important. We finally get another sales person to come over and state that Ashley was overbooked. Bill would be helping us and had a form he began filling out. The next words out of his mouth were "Where's your trade?". We didn't bring the trade - we only want to test drive. "Well, I need the trade to see if you have equity." We still owe on our car, we just want to look. He asks for IDs, paystubs, etc., and I mention the pre-approval from Chrylser Capital which he pushes aside. He says our credit sucks and that a Renegade is out, so we are limited in the new Jeep market to the '16 Compass and '16 Patriot because "those have rebates and will create equity... you need equity in the car because of your credit and no down payment". A. Stop saying equity in regards to cars. B. The Patriot and Renegade are roughly equal in price and have almost the same incentives through Chrysler Capital and through Jeep. C. We have a down payment but would prefer to not use it to keep the cash in hand. Me thinks you just need to get the Patriots off your lot. The Compass is too small for our future growing family so we want to look at Patriots. We go through the available Patriots ONLINE (I could do this in my PJs) and he picks out one that is a light on frills model and another that is the frillier big brother. Both the same trim but different packages. I ask what can be done on the list prices with rebates. He hems and haws that he wouldn't know that until they do financing. Please - you know what incentives you have available. I discuss what monthly payments I want (my mistake) and he gives us a look of "that can't be done". We have room to move on monthly payments so I ask him to show us what he can do. We decide to test drive mainly to see if I like the Patriot in general. Please keep in mind that it is dark and rainy - horrible time to check out a car. He picks up the less frills to let me test drive. He pulls the car into a dark area rather than a well lit area like a garage bay. We look around and I say "I think it's nice". A decent ride but I have to lower the seat to the floor to see out the windshield - not ideal. He takes us up to look at the frillier version on top of the hill and uses a flashlight to show us what it looks like in the dark rain weather. I like the idea of the higher-end options, but am not sold as he STILL won't tell us the bottom line price. He said "do you want to see what the payments would be with the more frill version and then the less frill version as a backup?". We agree so we can get the bottom line price. He says he's going to talk to the finance guys to see what can be done. 30 minutes later, he comes back and says "what down payment can you do to buy tonight?". I let him know what we'd be comfortable with and then remind him that we have the pre-approval. He seems like this is news to him even though I mentioned it earlier and the dealership got it through email! So then he takes that pre-approval paperwork and walks away. At this point, I'm thinking that Ashley ran only my credit rather than joint as we did for the pre-approval - my husband's credit is better and combined income is another 50%. He comes back roughly 15 minutes later to grab some other customer's paperwork and what my husband said looked like a cigar. Fast-forward 20 minutes. He finally comes back and says "the less frills would be around a 6% interest". I thought you were running the more frills first? "no...that's maybe 7...". I have a subscription service that tells me immediately if there was a pull on my credit report and it shows nothing so where did these numbers come from? He said there's a chance for better rates if they go out to other banks. He mentions that our pre-approval could go away with going out to other banks. I don't have the patience to mention that banks look at multiple pulls on credit for car loans/mortgages as one single pull in a certain time period. We say to go ahead the next morning (today) with the additional loan options. After discussing with my husband what a waste of time that was and looking at other dealership prices (upwards of $8k below the list price he was offering), I called the financing department to canceling having any loan pulls done. NEVER AGAIN!
