  • My friend and I were on the hunt for bookshelves for her place. We happened to be in the area yesterday and stopped in just to see what The Dump offered. I liked that we found unique pieces and large pieces, that seemed to be different than what we'd seen at other stores. And that is the only positive thing I can say about this business. My friend ended up not finding any shelves that fit her needs (clearly, not the businesses fault) but the reason for the one star review is what happened when I tried to buy a small decorative item. First, the store has "kiosk" like stations and I wasn't sure if the stations were for item look-ups or for actual check out. I approached one station and the first gal didn't even look up from the monitor to tell me she would be right with me. So, after standing next to her for about 4 minutes and waiting for some acknowledgement which wasn't coming, I found my way to a second kiosk station. Boo Hiss on basic customer service. The gal at the second kiosk was initially welcoming and nice. I set the bucket on the table as she asked me for a driver's license with my correct name and address. I noted that I just want to buy the bucket and I'd rather not have my information in their system. I don't want spam, am not a regular shopper there and don't need financing for a $59 dollar item. She said she needed the information to complete the sale. I thought maybe she thought I was going to pay with a credit card and wanted to verify the names. I noted that I'd be happy to show her my ID if I was paying with a credit card, but I was going to pay cash for the bucket and didn't need to be in their system. She again noted she couldn't complete the transaction without information. I said, "Okay, just put Jane Smith in there and we can move forward." She said she'd have to call a manager. I asked for clarification. "You mean I can't buy this item for cash without showing my ID and being put in your system?" (That must have been some bucket!) She said again she'd have to ask a manager what to do and she didn't see what the harm would be in having all of my information in their system. SPAM and ID Theft much?! That's why I don't want to be in your system. I left the bucket on the counter and said I really didn't need the bucket that bad. I remain stunned that two people would have to get involved and discuss the matter at level on par with national security. Keep the bucket, Home Goods had a similar item for half the price. I would much rather post what a great experience I had at this place, but I just can't and hope that with enough negative reviews, the management will seriously address training with staff members. Empower your employees to make varying customer interactions positive and avoid the "I can only do it this way" mentality.
