  • It's fine for what it is. Some of the reviews criticizing this store are completely absurd, and a prime reason why it's important to take geographical and social context into account when writing reviews on more "mainstream" businesses. This FreshCo, located at the corner of Dixie/Dundas, is just the latest in a series of lower-end grocery stores that have occupied the site since the 80s - remember when Price Chopper used to be here beside the Zellers? It's in a mall that has always, always catered to a lower-income area, and that's invariably going to result in a rougher-looking store and problems with the customer experience. It's like criticizing McDonalds for letting the waste bins overflow when an influx of students come in at lunchtime - it's an inevitable part of the brand. That being said, this site does have some decent selection, although I would steer far clear of the meat section when they announce a flash sale on certain items. Not only are the items often lower-quality or just a few days away from expiring yet sold for a "premium" discount (a fact confirmed to me by a packer who works at the store), but people hover over the staff members unloading like hawks and start hoarding packages of meat like packrats. You haven't lived until you've seen a half-dozen over-the-hill women who look like Edith Prickley from SCTV frantically going through packages of chicken thighs like their lives depended on it. The rest of the experience is uniformly good. I'm in here usually once or twice a month to pick up a few groceries, and the selection's always been fine. I can almost always find what I need, and there are times when there are some genuinely great buys, like 18 eggs for $2.78, stupidly-cheap Greek yogurt or $3 cream cheese. While I have encountered times when there aren't enough cashiers to handle the flow of customers, that's a problem I've found at a lot of grocery stores regardless of whether they're going for the high-end (like certain Loblaws locations or Whole Foods) or appeal to the masses like No Frills. If you need something quick and you just happen to be in the area, this is your best bet. I'd even put this above the Wal-Mart branch diagonally across the street.
