  • After stopping in regularly at my friendly neighborhood branch to purchase rolls of quarters for laundry, I was greeted with the following exchange today: Teller: "Hi, do you have and account?" Me: "Oh, I'd just like to buy a roll of quarters please." (pulls out $10 bill) Teller: "We can't exchange currency for non-customers." Me: "It's not a currency exchange, I come in to get quarters every couple of weeks." Teller: "Well we can't serve non-customers" Me: "This hasn't been an issue before. How do you get new customers if you can't help those who don't yet have an account?" Teller: "I'm sorry." (looks nervously at security guard) Me: That's fine. (puts money away and leaves) Now, I'm not sure if I just happened upon a new employee or if First Niagra just doesn't train their cashiers in basic banking concepts (like what constitutes a currency exchange or how to interact with community members, for examples). I am certain, however that I won't come back. To be clear, I moved to the area relatively recently and have been working full-time. Having an out of state bank has been inconvenient and I have been looking into establishing a Pittsburgh bank account. First Niagra is no longer on that list. Banks are first and foremost community service organizations. First Niagra personnel today demonstrated a lack of compassion towards a community member, ignorance of critical banking concepts, and a trend that will inevitably hurt their business (turning away potential account holders). I will have no further dealings with them and will encourage everyone I know to do the same. For although selling rolls of quarters to the public is a superficial task, a refusal to do so indicates a rot that undoubtedly corrupts deeper aspects of their client experience. For the record: -Currency exchange means changing between two different currencies. Probably not a common occurrence for the average Allegheny branch but still a fairly critical concept to nail down if you work for a bank. -All successful businesses serve their communities. The other financial organizations I've patronized for decades seem to realize this. Unfortunately it seems that some employees (and perhaps clientele) of First Niagra may mistake profit and service for irreconcilable aims.
