I had heard about this place for years but didn't try it until my wife said she wanted to try it. This review applies to all three locations -- Thompson Peak, Scottsdale Promenade and Tempe. I've been to the Thompson Peak location the most.
I had eaten here many times and tried various dishes and wasn't all that impressed. Then on one visit I discovered one of the best dishes I've ever eaten -- the Spicy Ginger and Onion Beef on white rice. This is the most flavorful thing I've ever eaten and sometimes the peppers (not sure if they're Thai peppers or small JalapeƱos) are really intense but I like it that way.
Years ago they used to have $5 lunch specials and you could have pretty much any dish on the menu, including salad and a bowl of wonton chips. This place was always packed and had lines of people waiting for them to open. Sounds good for business but I always wondered how they could make any money. That deal changed to a $6 lunch special and they still give you a salad but only a few wonton chips on the side with your entree. I don't even know if they have the lunch special anymore since the last several times I've been there hasn't been during Saturday lunch. Dinner portions are larger and more expensive but you don't get a salad for some reason.
There used to be a Flo's in Terminal 4 at Sky Harbor International Airport a few years ago; it was right before you went through security. I kinda wish it was still there for the times I've had to sit at the airport waiting for my flight.
I would give this place 5 stars but occasionally my favorite dish has been a little overcooked (including crab wontons on one occasion) or a bit off, lacking the flavor it usually has. On one occasion we had a really rude waitress at the Promenade location. She brought us our food and before my wife could even taste the Lemon Chicken she had ordered asked us how everything was. That particular dish seemed a bit off as she had ordered it before but our waitress never came back to the table until about 30 minutes later and when we told her about the food she said "why didn't you say something before now?" It's because you disappeared for 30 minutes you twit. My wife refuses to go to that location anymore although we went back once after getting no service at the Cantina Laredo across the street (see my other review).
However, more often than not we've had a great experience here.
I do wish they'd open a location on the west side of town as it's about a 30+ minute drive to all three locations. Takeout with that kind of commute doesn't work because my favorite dish doesn't reheat well. It needs to be eaten fresh.
