  • Beware the words "it should be okay" It is not a problem to worry about right now. Every fluid leak is a problem waiting to happen. I have gone to Dolar's automotive now for over fifteen years. I trusted them, as many here as my go to mechanics. I would have never figured them to be unscrupulous considering them beyond reproach. I am now a former customer. This is what happens when you ask them to do more than they are actually qualified to do. They need to focus on brake jobs and oil changes exclusively. Last December I took my car to him to replace a blown engine from a choice of many cheaper quotes. Recalling the numerous signs around the shop touting engine replacements, I figured they had my back on this. I trusted them especially with such a large repair. They did the job in about nine days. The excuse for taking so long was he had to send the first used engine back due to rust issues. They wanted to make it just right for me. After the install, which included brackets for the transmission for 300.00+ extra I received the car. I might add with a one-year warranty straight from Mike. (verbal). From the get go the valve cover had an oil leak. It smelled hot and oily all the time. They insisted this was normal and no problem. (It runs just fine, there does not seem to be a problem) The check engine light, popped on after a few days. I had it scanned and found it was a catalytic converter (there are three) I took it back to Dolar's and he confirmed it but I had to take it somewhere else, as he did not "weld". Upon raising it up at a muffler shop, I found out these are "bolted" between, the exhaust manifold, and the pipes not welded. They had corrupted the catalytic converters because they failed to clean out the engine before slapping it all together. The next issue was a constant leak from the power steering pump, again due to a shoddy repair technique. I took the car back to him several times for this issue. The final time he had it there for almost two weeks. He insisted repeatedly he could not find the leak. The leak was dripping fluid all over my driveway but he could not "see" it. At their suggestion, I had the engine and under carriage spray cleaned. It was spotless yet still they could not find the leak. He told me not to worry, as it was not a real problem. (I notice this in many of these reviews). I took the car to another mechanic who hoisted it up and physically showed me the leak. It was the pump and needed a replacement to stop the leak. I had the pump rebuilt and thought that was that. I drove it a total of ten miles when the motor just stopped. No acceleration in fact I was coasting downhill. I had it towed back to the other mechanic first to evaluate the problem. I first wrongly assumed it might have been something he might have done. Thinking it was just a belt. Upon replacing the belt, it found the engine still "stuck". I had it towed to Dolar's to have him make good on the one-year warranty. He called me back an hour later (fastest time ever) saying the power steering pump replacement screwed up the engine and bent the valves. I am no mechanic but I do know a shuffle when I see one. Is it possible this could have wrecked the engine? I have not a clue but it seems highly unlikely. I contacted several reputable sources without mentioning names and just asked how likely this was to happen. One laughed aloud when I told him. I found out this warranty was a lie and a veritable catch 22. Had I have replaced the catalytic converter (it smogged okay) Had I have even gotten an oil change or anything I would have lost out here. I think another mechanic even rotating the tires by would have voided this useless warranty. Mike railroaded me denying the engine was shoddy. He denied fixing a direct problem with a warranted engine. I personally think the engine froze, broke the belt, and endangered (maybe destroyed) the power steering pump and the rest of the stuff on the car. My only reproach would have been small claims court. I ended up having the car towed to a junkyard a complete loss. Hard lesson learned I would never take any car to them for anything.
