  • This is a review specifically for the South Eastern Ontario area, Whitby in particular. My boyfriend and I moved to Whitby (I came from Pickering) and I was surprised when the Welcome Wagon lady showed up at my door with a basket of stuff for me. Having never had a visit from the Welcome Wagon, I was pretty interested to see what it was all about. First of all, the majority of stuff I was given is complete junk and at least half of it was thrown out once I shut the door. Magnets and notepads are always usable but I don't need FIVE sets of information for dentists in the area, along with free toothpaste samples from each. If you're going to promote a type of business, pick one or two. I AM looking for a new dentist in the area but I have no idea who to pick now, since I had information from no less than 5 dentists and received information in the mail from two more. None of them came "highly recommended" by the Welcome Wagon, it was all just "here's some information". Not helpful at all. Secondly, as someone new to the area, I was also displeased that the only schools they seemed to be promoting were religiously inclined. I myself am not and would have liked to see some information for secular public schools, even if just for information purposes (as I probably won't have a choice due to proximity of the closest school). I'm not a mom and I'm not planning to be anytime soon, but it would have been helpful. Those school flyers went directly in the trash. The Welcome Wagon lady didn't really seem super excited or anything and it was a very practiced and repetitive thing, standing in my front hallway with her as she went over EVERY SINGLE FLYER in her package, and there were no less than 40 of them. It was a waste of my time; I would have rather received the package and gone over them myself and contacted her with questions. The best part about the entire experience is that I did get some valuable information regarding emergency contact information for the City of Whitby, information from the Fire and Police Departments and a City directory for municipal affairs. It's been about two or three months since the Welcome Wagon came to my house and my phone still won't stop ringing. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't have opened the door in the first place.
