Whistle Hop is right off the main drag in Fairview, a community about 15- 20 minutes outside of Asheville. From what I can tell their brewing facilities are in some smaller buildings down the hill and the main attraction/their tap room is in the caboose at the top of the hill.
Parallel to the caboose is a shipping container with a large deck with seating wedged between the two. Quite a little entertainment complex with an area for a bonfire.
The train car really adds to the experience -but it's a bit "tight" in the tasting room, especially when it gets busy. The taps are at the back next to a wall cooler and have these kitschy railroad crossing signs. The are a couple of really neat seating areas at the top that you can climb into. It does get warm up there and it's a bit hard to hear with all the road noise.
During my visit there were only two beers of theirs on tap, one of which kicked before I could get a pint. I was given a taste of their Pineapple NE IPA, which was really good and I asked for a pint. What I was given instead was their Lemon, Lavender Saison without being told. When I brought it back up to point it out, I was informed the IPA keg had kicked. Don't you just hate it when you get a taste of something good and then watch everyone else finish drinking theirs. To be fair the Saison was good and the ingredients did shine through - I drank it anyway and they did offer to replace it with something else. Before leaving they did place a Wit of theirs on tap - but I'm not a Wit fan. They do have several other taps from local breweries, but technically I travelled a couple of hours to check this place out and drink their beers - I can get Highland Mandarina at Ingles.
So the theme for me was disappointment. Looks like a great place for locals to hang out on the weekends. If I do ever get back that way, I'll likely give them another shot.
