| - This place could only be cooler if John Hamm (in all his Mad Man glory) was at the bar buying me delicious drinks. The minute you walk through the front door you are transported back in time. Back to a place where you would imagine ashtrays on the tables, people tanning with baby oil, and Heartbreak Hotel was making its way through the charts. This, my friends, is a thing of simple beauty.
The hotel is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, having opened in December of 1956. Though it has changed hands several times since then, the vibe remains the same. The hotel has undergone an extensive renovation, yet has remained true to its roots in mid-century minimalism. The rooms are spacious and modern, with furniture that is both functional and cool. So often those two things don't go together, and you get a beautiful chair that bruises you when you sit in it to check your email. The bathtubs are marvelous. They are in the actual room, though there is a divider for those needing or wanting modesty. There is also a separate shower, of course.
I did not have the opportunity to swim in the pool, but it is circular and is the central focus of the courtyard rooms. They serve food and apparently have the ability to make fancy coffee drinks poolside. I had a great view of it from the workout and spa area where I tried to burn off calories from the strawberry basil martini. The exercise facilities are not large, but have everything you would probably want or need. The spa is cute and has a small but fun store attached.
Finally, I feel the need to include Zuzu, the on site restaurant. The food was excellent, as was the room service. They will bring you hand-crafted cocktails to your room. Lots of them! They don't even seem judgy about it. They have a bloody mary bar/mimosa on the weekends, along with a delicious brunch.
I would absolutely recommend Valley Ho and would gladly stay here again. It is not a big resort, so if that is what you are looking for maybe check out the Biltmore. It has a similar vibe but more property, etc. I knocked off a star because there was an obnoxious group of groomsmen staying in the rooms around us. They were unbelievably loud, which was a huge bummer because my friend was doing an Ironman in the morning and we really could have used a good night of sleep. The hotel didn't do anything about the noise, and the rooms definitely are not sound proof.
