I'm a guy with thin facial hair who uses a safety razor employing the three pass method. One with the grain, one across the grain and one against the grain. I've been doing this for years so I know how difficult the process can be. It takes a certain amount of practice to get it all right. I nick myself and I also give myself some razor burn every now and then.
I came for a straight razor shave and he got pretty close to that. Not as well as I would have done myself, but not bad. I would have liked to see a few more than just one pass with the razor because it's pretty difficult to get it super smooth on just one. There was a little pulling of the hair on the razor. I wonder if a different angle or swipe speed would change that. His secret weapon was to use a good quality electric shaver after that pass, but I think a good straight razor pass is smoother and easier on your skin than the electric shaver. He used a pretty good shaving cream, but I would have liked to see him build up a better lather with brush and bowl. They do stock good quality shaving cream for sale that I would recommend to anyone (Geo F. Thumper). Their sandalwood is my favorite. Overall, I enjoyed my experience. These guys are good but with some work, their shave can be great! I didn't have any nicks, just some slight razor burn.
I really liked the atmosphere of this place. I think they do more haircuts than shaves. The haircut I saw him give the guy before me seemed really nice. My brother also got his haircut here and it looked great. I don't live here in Montreal but if I did, I'd definitely come back for a haircut.
