| - This location of Yoga Sanctuary is a pearl among many downtown locations.
I understand, unfortunately, that Yoga is becoming less of a philosophy and more of a commercialised lifestyle, misconstrued by the business-minded to sell their wares (tattooed with sacred symbols that are now en vogue), but Yoga Sanctuary is just that, -a sanctuary which feels encapsulated in a time-warp.
In the case of Yoga a time-warp is indeed a great thing and I'll tell you why.
The minute you enter the class you get the feeling that this is no laughing-matter, the studio has nothing remotely resembling a spa. I love that. The practice room looks much more like an old dance studio, where one could find a skilled waltz instructor losing his patience over distracted couples. It's enormous, with a high ceiling, and handsome wooden flooring.
You can just tell that Yoga Sanctuary has huge following of devoted yogis, eagerly anticipating their next class, --and why not? The location is so central yet the ambiance seems so removed from the bustling College Park, aside from the constant smell of W Burgers from below.
No hot classes are offered here (or at their Danforth location), due to the age of the building(s), and as far as I'm concerned it goes unmissed as compared to the quality of classes offered. Our instructor, Rosie, was passionate about her practice and kept me enjoying every moment of that long class.
The only thing I would recommend is to find a spot towards the middle of the class, if possible, to be able to clearly hear every word of instruction.
