| - Food was a 3.5 but I'm rounding up to 4 because of the nicest, friendliest, and entertaining bartender
I relied on Yelp to help me plan what to eat during my visit to Montreal. I saw that Au Pied de Cochon was the #1 restaurant on Yelp in Montreal. I figured well that's a must! First off, we tried to make reservations via phone for several days during various times (e.g., before 5pm, after 5pm, after 7pm, after 10pm) and we left voice messages. We still couldn't get in touch with them to make a reservation. We came in on a Saturday early evening around 5:30. Luckily, there were seats at the bar with no wait. Although the restaurant was empty, all the tables were reserved. They did fill up quickly as the night went on. I experienced such wonderful and fun service at the bar that I'm so happy we were never able to make reservations! The bartender offered us a drink, samples of his cocktails, samples of garnishes (i.e., ground cherry, toffee chips)! It was also fun to see him make his cocktails with his wide smile and sense of humor! Really made the whole experience a lot of fun!
Food: In my opinion, it was just OK. A bit salty. Nothing spectacular.
Poutine with foie gras: definitely my favorite dish; foie gras was delicious and the whole dish just went well together
Melting pot pork dish: a mixture of different cuts of pork; pretty tasty; came with mashed potatoes as well
A replacement duck dish for a sold out menu dish was too salty. I don't remember the name but it was duck wrapped in some kind of pasta/crepe covered with mushroom sauce. I wasn't a fan.
Beefsteak: pretty good, but nothing special. came with fries dipped in duck fat which didn't taste any different from regular fries.
I think my experience here wasn't as great as other yelpers because there were a lot of dishes that they no longer served or were out of. IDK...maybe we should have gotten the duck in a can???! Oh well.. at least the poutine was good..
