My best friend and I first took notice of Kekou Gelato from a friend's recommendation for the Kensington Market location. When we arrived there two years ago, it wasn't even open! What a huge bummer. Fortunately, we kept Kekou on our "to-try-and-instagram" list.
After a Saturday afternoon of classes, I brought up the idea that we try Kekou again. I didn't even notice this was a whole other Kekou location when I was navigating how to get here from the Downtown core. This location is conveniently right off the 501 Streetcar for commuters. Upon entering, it gave a very modern/youth-but-not-too-youth vibe. Staff was diverse too despite being an asian inspired food place, so that was pretty neat. The line up starts at the very left back. I had about 15 people ahead of me, which isn't really that long considering there are 6+ staff members serving you to get you from the end of the line to the cash register. So really, only about 4 people were directly in front of me for scooped gelato. I waited less than a minute per person. When it came to me, I ordered the Oolong Tea and HK Milk Tea based on my liking for tea flavoured desserts, and Yelp recommendations. My server wasn't wearing gloves...I'm not sure if that's a safety issue or not because I never really took notice if my ice cream servers wore gloves or not...but I did this time. She was super friendly and was an expert scooper though. I got my 2 scoops on a sugar cone. This is where it gets a bit weird. My friend was right in front of me in line when she ordered, and was sitting down by the time I got to cash, but there were still two people ahead of me that needed to pay. I have a feeling that Kekou's perceived long line is actually divided into 1. Scooped Ice Cream 2. Soft Serve and 3. Drinks. This one customer at the front took forever to pay and my ice cream was slowly starting to melt. 5 excruciating minutes later, I finally get to pay, and my ice cream made its first drip onto my hand. You can imagine my internal tears.
The cashier got so caught up with the building line that they forgot to give me a rewards stamp card. I didn't find out about it until we left and my friend asked me if I wanted hers. That's the only star deduction for Kekou. I otherwise loved my two scoops. I preferred the Oolong Tea over the HK Milk Tea as it had a richer flavour, and was also more subtle on the sweetness level. Both were excellent flavours on their own, but were just not that great together (imagine having cake and then chocolate milk; chocolate milk will taste plain in comparison).
My friend noted that $5.50 for two scoops was pretty steep, but I think it was reasonable given the unique flavours you won't find in gelato form elsewhere.
Overall, friendly staff and excellent flavours. Recommended!
