  • My husband and I celebrated closing on our first house together near GWIN Wine Bar right as Labor Day weekend was beginning. GWIN is located in a strip mall and tucked in , so look closely so you don't miss it. There is plenty of parking and that is a good thing. There are so many great wines here though, I recommend taking an UBER! We were the first to arrive about 320pm after signing away our life and a lot of our savings! No one was in this cute wine bar ! We loved the vibe and decor , immediately upon entering. It's cool and inviting. There was no music and lots of chatter amongst the staff... but eventually they tweaked with the music on the tele and got some going. We were greeted warmly by the owner who explained the wine list and his families wines and vineyard : Chacewater. I was instantly excited because it's located one county over from where my family is from and where I grew up in Northern California. My love of wine and vines from California is strong and needless to say, I was excited that this wine bar in Scottsdale had meaning from my home. A story to be told makes a local place even sweeter in my opinion. The Chacewater wines on the list are a bit pricier than the others, but the taste on the palate is why and its worth the $$. We tasted a couple of the reds and wished we had the opportunity of getting a bottle to go home with us. The name GWIN means wine in Cornish, we were told by the owner and is part of the families history stemming from Cornwall, England. Happy Hour begins at 300pm and goes til 700 and has several offerings of wines by the glass at discounted prices local beers and several small plates too. There is also a Wine Not Wednesday special too, that we hope to partake in one day soon. Yelpers take note, there is also a sweet check in offer. IF I were to say anything at all remotely negative about GWIN, I would say that I got so excited about seeing a Veuve Rose by the glass on the champagne/sparkling wine menu and I asked the girl who popped over to wait on us , about the Veuve being of the Veuve Clicquot champagnery, ( I know, I should have read the menu a little better because it clearly states Cannon of France , BUT it does say 'Rose' !) She said ,' What?' no less than three times with a confused frown and then admitted she knew 'hardly anything about wine'. Then another guy from down the bar who overheard my question chimed in about how that was not from the Veuve Clicquot and the 'Rose' was an actual misprint. He then proceeded to tell me what Veuve means. I was confused as to why? With that, I told him I had lived in Paris and traveled the champagne region of Reims and Epernay , extensively. By the way, the 'Veuve' in the name of Veuve Clicquot means widow, Fwiw! I seriously don't think this guy gave one rats about my own history of the wine regions in California or France, as he just ignored that non-informational information ! Haha, and that's okay. :) Barring that little weird 'exchange', we loved pretty much everything about GWIN. The huge selection of wines and beers is again, awesome! There are even Cornish Pasty's of The Cornish Pasty Co. here that also rotate. We were treated to a Dessert Flight by our lovely, friendly and knowledgable guy bartender. He was personable and very nice ;We liked him.. he was always there to fill our waters , offer another wine or answer questions or just discuss wine! The dessert flight was nothing like I had seen before. Small little glasses with desserts . One glass had a creamy vanilla ice cream with olive oil from the families olive mill in California over the ice cream! Seems odd , right? No! This was unique ; different taste that was good! Next a very rich , chocolate brownie; just a bite will do ya.. so good and so rich! The perfect size. Next a red wine sorbet. What a great idea- frozen, slushy wine!! Then a small little glass of red wine. All in all we loved GWIN. It's new and local and quaint. The very small kinks like the music tweaking for several minutes .. Those little things will work themselves out and this wine bar will prosper , no doubt, as the owner seems to have passion for his love of wine and the family behind it. Next time we will Uber it and sample more! The vibe here is again, amazing and trendy .. a great place for hanging with friends or a lovely date night .. and I wish we lived closer ... BUT.. that's the next house ! :)
