  • "So if she's ordering whiskey you can assume she's clearly comfortable with herself, knows what she wants and has no problem making it happen - regardless of what anyone else at the bar might think." - Elite Daily, 10 Reasons Why You Should Always God For The Girl Who Drinks Whiskey When I moved to a new city and realized that some of my social interests were different than many of my fellow college graduates, I found myself exploring restaurants and bars in downtown, because that's where I wanted to be: in the city. I was first introduced to Meat & Potatoes (M&P) in Pittsburgh's Theatre Square, by a colleague. Several weeks later, I found myself going back, by myself. There is a weird stigma about women going to bars alone but if you know what you like (drink wise and environment wise) then, go for it! I love going out alone to enjoy a drink or meal alone. M&P is the perfect location and environment for such a night. Why? Because it lays somewhere near casual fine dining and brings the working professionals and artsy culture of Pittsburgh together, under one roof. It's a place where I know I will get great service, a stellar Manhattan (I like mine with Blanton's and 2 cherries) and a great seat for people-watching across their large but cozy bar. I've been to M&P so many times now that the bartenders know me by name - whether that is a good thing or not, is up to you. I've enjoyed an hour or more to myself at M&P but, I have also had some fantastic conversations late into the night with those visiting Pittsburgh or locals who also love this spot. If you are looking for dinner, make a reservation and you will be in store for a whirl! M&P's dinner menu is home to a variety of quality cuts of meat and fish but their mushroom risotto and sprouts are drool-worthy as well. Their weekend brunch and bloody mary bar is one of the best in Pittsburgh but be sure to make a reservation or you won't get a seat! I went through this phase where I would be craving a great bar environment and I would want to try a new place in town. I am all for trying new spots but, there is a certain time in the night where you simply shouldn't fix what's not broken. Don't walk across the city if what you love is standing in front of you. On a late night's I have gotten into the habit of ordering fernet and coke at the bar, along with their signature espresso panna cotta. Yummy! Get a group of friends or co-workers together, or venture out alone for a great time and drink at Meat and Potatoes. And, don't forget the whiskey. Pittsburgh is a Meat and Potatoes kind of town, and M&P is where you want to be if you are a downtown dweller or visitor! - xoxo, A (A California Girl Living in Pittsburgh on Purpose)
