  • Sam Boyd was an amazing person. I remember the day I heard of his death in 1993. Ever since I've been coming to Las Vegas it seems everywhere I go there is a Boyd Gaming Casino very near by or someone who knows of Sam Boyd. I fact I have stay at Boyd Gaming Casinos on several occasions. Mostly the Orleans on Tropicana. He built the California Hotel and Casino. It's located about a block north of Fremont Street and the Fremont Street Experience on East Ogden Ave. It is connected to the Main Street Hotel, Casino and Brewery (Also a Boyd Gaming Property) by an enclosed walkway over Main Street. This casino was here the first time I came to Las Vegas. It was built by Sam Boyd and even though he'd been in the casino business he didn't found Boyd Gaming until he built this Hotel and Casino. Other than an added tower the hotel looks a lot like it did the first time I came. The sign is a bit more elaborate but the building looks the same. The hotel has 781 rooms and an 85,000 sq. ft. Gaming floor and check this out, in 1989 some dude rolled dice for three hours and six minutes in craps without losing here. I bet he was happy. Maybe not so much for the casino. I have won some in Blackjack here though. The inside is different since the first time I came here and since the last time I visited this particular casino several years ago, the last several years I've been staying mostly in the south end of the Strip. I feel the need to come back and stay in the Fremont St. area. So anyway the theme of this hotel is Hawaiian. Aloha and in fact the employees there will say that to you. The people here are nice. Boyd Gaming does a good job with customer service. The casino is nice, plenty of table games with low minimums. Not as crowded as the tables in the casinos right on Fremont where you may have to wait a bit to play. Nice place to get away from super huge crowds on the Strip and Fremont St. Rooms are nice and affordable starting around $60-$100. It won a Best of Las Vegas Award for 2017. There is also the award winning restaurant the Redwood Steakhouse. Beer at this casino is also always inexpensive. I think so many people focus on the Strip and miss out on nice places like this.
