| - I am a huge tea drinker, and love all the intricate aspects that go along with tea. So, with that being said when I came across Teavana I was excited to find that tea stores were now coming to readily available areas (malls). Unfortunately I found A LOT of things to dislike.
1. PRICES$$$$... Teavana is WAY overpriced for the quality of tea they sell. The prices basically are DOUBLE what you would pay else where, reason being? Probably because they want to be the next Starbucks).
2. SERVICE*%$#!....I had a nice laugh reading the other reviews saying how knowledgeable their staff was about tea. They have made up things on several different occasions when I have gone to their stores. Also making claims and diagnosing their customers as to what tea will CURE this and WILL make them lose weight, and worst yet claiming that green tea is the healthiest tea to drink ....(which also happens to be some of their priciest teas that they carry...ha). ALL teas are good for you END OF STORY, no tea is better for you than any other(each one contains DIFFERENT antioxidants and so on). SO for them to say that to unwitting tea clients is horrible.
3. ACCESSORIES ACCESSORIES ACCESSORIES !...This seems to be their approach to business. Rather than concentrating on selling good quality tea, and educating their customers they resort to stocking the store with 90% accessories and 10% TEA. Pus the fact that all their accessories are very pricey and the sales people are all young girls in their 20's who will pounce on you the moment you walk within 50 feet of the store. They have very high pressure sales pitches that REQUIRE you to buy at least 2 teas at a time in order to mix them. PLUS...you just have to get a tin to put the tea in ( I was once told by a sales associate that if I did not buy a tin to put their tea in that the tea itself would only last a week....TOPS. HA HA HA.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST....
4. TEA..... WHERE TO START...hmmmm, Well Their selection usually around 12-36, Is very limited and seems to be compiled almost completely by flavored or mixed teas. (which is fine if you know nothing about tea and want to drink horribly fruity water with no trace of Camellia sinensis ). *sarcastic voice* I have had several samples and EVEN bought some (blah). So my review is not un-just, I walked in one day looking for a nice traditional Japanese green Tea. The Sencha they had smelled okay, So when I inquired about it they told me it was not to be drunken alone, (here comes the best part.....wait for it......) YOU MUST MIX IT WITH OUR PINA COLADA HERBAL TEA. (I responded right after i forced the vomit back down). I told them very frankly that their suggestion sounded "not that tasty". They responded by saying "were sorry but we CAN'T sell you this tea without you purchasing another tea/herbal to mix with it. (probably in an attempt to make me say "oh OK, sure"). But to no avail, I walked out and decided never to return.
This review has been months in the making....AND I hope to have persuaded some of the individuals out there , who for some reason seem to fancy Teavana....go figure?
OH AND AVOID WHITE AUGUST also......that is if you actually enjoy tea!
*Camellia sinensis- is the species of plant whose leaves and leaf buds are used to produce tea. (for those not in the know)
I RECOMMEND.... TEA GSCHWENDER AND SOUVIA .....for people in the PHX area.
both establishments carry a very nice selection of tea and their are no high pressure sales tactics. ALSO Tea Gschwender has some sales associates who actually know what they are talking about when it comes to TEA. (and when I say they "know" I am understating that).
