| - Hate to give this place 2 stars. In actuality, the service here definitely deserves 5. But unfortunately, the food here was not up to par with the great service that I had received.
This cafe is inside of the Barleys casino, a legendary ol school mini casino which brews its own beers. It's a very simple place and its serves a fairly basic menu. The waitress that took my order was great, she was helpful and friendly.
The first thing I ordered were the shrimp cocktail. The shrimp were either undercooked or just the frozen ready-to-eat ones, but they were sorta slimy and not sweet at all. The cocktail sauce was gross, it tasted basically like bottled ketchup.
The next thing that came up were the chili fries. It was canned chili beans on not-so-crispy shoestring fries. I had about 3 bites, and I was done. One of the hardest things I've ever had to eat.
The Reuben was next. Ok, so it wasn't that bad. I thought that the rye bread could have been crispier, but the flavor was pretty good. The corned beef tasted like it was premade, and so did the dressing. I was thankful that they had at least rinsed the sauerkraut, because it wasn't too sour. The coleslaw didn't taste like anything at all, probably came from a jar.
The food tasted like it was all made a while ago, and probably came from a can. I prefer things that are made fresh. But the food is nostalgic in a way. And it reminds us how far we have gotten since then. Too bad that the food couldn't hold a candle to the amazing front of the house staff that works there. But as I always say "Que sera, sera".
