  • Seriously, does anyone actually like APS? We're all APS customers, not because we choose to be - but because we're simply forced to be. It is what it is and we have no choice but to put up with them. Since I first moved to Phoenix, I've dealt with them since 2007. Two years in an apartment and the remaining time in the home I purchased in 2009. For the most part, I don't really have issues with them. I simply just shut up and pay my bill. Sometimes I question the bizarre changes in balances from month to month, but why bother fighting it? I know, for a fact, exactly what happens when you do. Which is precisely why I felt compelled to write this review. Several years ago, while living in a 750 square foot apartment, the place went unattended for over a month. The air conditioner was turned off, meaning that, regardless of how hot the temperatures reached (i.e. enough for a table vase to literally implode), the bill would be significantly less than most summer months. This should be a given, right? Only it wasn't. In fact, it was damn-near triple what a typical bill should be, shooting upwards of almost 300 dollars! When customer service was immediately contacted in order to provide an explanation, they were initially baffled by this mysterious jump in price. And then, after giving it some thought, the service rep came to what she felt was a solid and justifiable conclusion by asking the million dollar question: "Was your refrigerator plugged in?" "That's it! The reason why your bill is triple what you'd typically pay is because, despite not running the AC for a month, your fridge had to work "extra hard" to keep things cool." You're kidding, right? So not only did it have to work "extra hard," but it had to work 300-dollars worth of "hard" in order to keep my cheese and chocolate from melting? This explanation is probably one of the most ridiculous attempts at justifying a price jump that I've ever heard - far worse than the car insurance companies blaming my increased rates on "dangerous drivers," despite having absolutely no correlation with my perfect driving record. Naturally, it was no surprise to later discover that the reason for the price jump was because APS had somehow criss-crossed the setup with a neighbor - which just so happened to house about five hotel employees with utility costs that were covered by their place of employment. They could run the AC all day-every day, with zero financial consequences. Needless to say, they apologized and had no choice but to rectify the situation. But this story alone should give you a good idea of who you're dealing with. And while that mistake might be the only one that I've actually caught, God knows how many bill discrepancies exist that go unnoticed. If you've ever taken a look at the ridiculous fees that they sneak into your bills, you'd know that this is one company that definitely is in need of some heavier regulation. Sorry APS, but your reputation will be forever tainted with me - even if it does make for one hell of a story. Now, if you'll excuse me while I go unplug my fridge.
