  • I was pretty disappointed in the beginner Groupon "class." At least for the flower project in March 2018, you do very, very little. One of the teachers gathers some molten glass on a rod for you as you stand to the side. They bring the rod over and you assist the teacher in dipping your molten glass into some colored glass shards (you're both holding the rod). Then they take the rod back from you and they get another dab of molten glass, they then dip it in another color for you and flatten the end as you watch. They have you put on sunshades and meet you at another furnace where you both hold the rod again and spin it together. Then when that's done, you sit at a booth and grab some metal tongs and while one teacher turns the rod, you have your hand literally guided by another teacher to pull at the molten glass to form the flower pedals. Literally, he guides your hand on every move. He did this for every participant (you go one at a time so I watched a number of people before me). He then has you grab another metal instrument and he holds your hands again to physically move your hands to pull the flower pedals away from the rod to form the stem. After that, you get to do the two steps that you have full control over. First, you answer whether you want a curly stem or a straight stem and then the instructor makes that for you. Second, the teacher separates the flower from the rod and you hold a torch to round the edges of the sharp glass. I'd rather have an ugly flower that I felt I did something for than having the teachers literally move my hands for every step of the process. Hopefully they can re-imagine their beginner classes to be a *little* more interactive. I know there are some safety concerns and that some people probably enjoy this style of "learning" but it was not for me at all.
