Having been an employee of the ROM I want to explain something to those who think museums and galleries in Canada should be free like they are in some parts of the U.S and Europe. There the government collects a tourist Tax that goes directly to the operational needs of these facilities. A portion of the money you pay to stay in a hotel goes into this. In New York it funnels billions into the fund. Also their Federal Governments are much more generous towards art funding. Canada for the most part does not have this tax and upkeep is paid through admission and a some cash from the government. The downside is galleries and museums have to pander. Such as too many dinosaur shows as it bring in families who can be sold a membership.
