Evergreen Nature Preserve is a small urban forest near the Independence Blvd./Albemarle Rd. split. It is located next to Sheffield Neighborhood Park. This preserve is primarily for bird watchers and has been adopted by the Mecklenburg Audubon Society. There is basically one short hiking trail through the preserve. In the middle there is a small clearing for bird watching. Near the entrance, the Edward's Branch wetlands area is crossed by a wooden bridge where you can see various migratory waterfowl. There are no restroom facilities here. A map is available on the county's website. You can park along Tarrington or behind the Winterfield Elementary School. Dogs are welcome, except for the clearing area where there is a posted sign.
