  • Well I have been waiting for this place to open ever since I heard about it sometime last summer I think.. I noticed they were finally open so I stopped in for some dinner and a couple of beers last night. It was OK. I was a big fan of Famous Sams when that was there.. Just a friendly neighborhood bar with good food and decent prices. Flying Basset is not that. I found the place to be fairly impersonal.. Almost industrial. The floors and bar are just concrete.. Tables are long tall wooden tables. Lighting was bright.. I won't say fluorescent as I didn't look all that closely, but it just felt like I was in a warehouse somewhere. TVs were all muted (Olympics were on) and there was some really soft music playing... This all made the place just really awkward and quiet. There weren't a ton of people in, but I could clearly hear conversations taking place on the other side of the room. They only had 1 of their own beers on.. Cooper Ale, which I had and actually enjoyed. Nice easy drinker. They said they'd have more of their own beers on towards the end of the month, but they did have a selection of some other great beers in the meantime. I went with the Bell's Two Hearted for my 2nd beer ( one of my favorites). I did notice a bit of a soapy aftertaste to the Bells.. Not sure if the lines were just cleaned or if I got a glass that wasn't rinsed fully. It wasn't so bad that the beer was bad or anything.. Just something I noticed. I finished the beer. Pretty basic bar food menu from what I remember. I ended up getting the Ruben with onion rings. The sandwich was HUGE and I was only able to finish half. I did notice most other patrons couldn't finish their meals during my visit and ended up taking it home. I'll say that after the sandwich cooled down a bit it was good. It was served nuclear hot for some reason. Onion rings were good.. They should update the menu though as they were $1 extra.. Didn't find that out until after I ordered them. Took the 2nd half of the sandwich home. I do like their takeout boxes.. not styrofoam. Basically, I got out of there after 2 beers and a sandwich for $34. Ballpark prices without having to go to the ballpark! I can't really see myself hanging out there as I did at Famous Sams, but I will likely go back to try more of their beers as the one of theirs I had, I did enjoy. Will likely not get the food there again. Not that it was bad, just too big and too expensive.
