| - The Good: It is a unique and beautiful property that is built right into the Butte. The staff was courteous and very nice, and they even offered me a free room upgrade at check-in because it was my anniversary. My wife went to the spa and had an 80 minute massage, and also a facial and she said the spa experience was very nice and the staff there was amazing. If you are looking for an above average hotel, this is the place. It does have a water slide, which is pretty cool if you have kids. Also, there are a handful of jacuzzi's that are dug into the Butte at various locations.. offering some privacy and a great view of the Phoenix sky-line.
The Bad: I thought the place was very pricey for what it is. I have stayed at JW Marriots around the country, and even in Hawaii that weren't this expensive. It is an average hotel room, with a popcorn ceiling that certainly feels like it was built awhile ago. $300+ per night for a very average hotel room is a little steep. Also, the pools are ok.. but they are small and were crowded the whole time. I saw a couple reviews that talked about a "lazy river" and I have to imagine that those people never actually stayed at the resort because there is certainly no lazy river. There is a small 30 foot "river" that attaches the two pools, but that is it. Where they really get you is the cost of drinks and food at the pool. I totally understand trying to make a profit, but holy crap.. their prices make airports and ballparks look like a deal. $8 cans of beer? $8 for a .50 Tyson corn dog? $10 for a weak single shot mixed drink? Come on, that is just crazy. Also, my wife had the poolside ceviche.. and caught a serious case of food poisoning. Oh, I guess it is worth mentioning now that the pool side wait staff was very slow. We also caught our server picking his teeth with his fingers while serving. Pretty gross. I am not even churching it up, we left the hotel early to head home and didn't enjoy the pool like we were going to the next day. That sucked :(
The Ugly: Top of the Rocks restaurant. Wow.. this place is a joke. The staff was nice, but the menu sucked. They try so hard to be trendy and expensive that their menu just sucks. We had anniversary reservations and after sitting down and looking at the menu for 10 minutes.. we decided to leave and go to the Keg Steakhouse. The selection on the menu is beyond weak. $26 Cauliflower Risotto? $26 Seared Tofu? $42 for filet mignon + having to pay $6 for each side? They don't even offer any dinner salads. Crazy. We decided to leave after the guy next to us sent his steak back for not being cooked properly. That being said, we didn't eat here, so we cant attest to the quality/taste of the food.. but for the cost, we would have been disappointed if we had.
May I suggest JW Marriot Desert Ridge? We will most likely be going back there from now on.
