| - I applaud ASU's attempt to bring healthy dining options to the downtown campus. As a vegan, it's usually Bowl of Greens or walking a few blocks off campus for other decent vegan options (especially now that Fair Trade closed down). I was very happy to see Engrained open on the ground floor of the law school.
The menu at Engrained is creative and has something for everyone. As a vegan, I was excited to see at least two options for me - in particular the vegan chorizo tacos and the baked tofu bowl. I went with the tacos because, well, tacos. They were served quickly and looked nice. However, once I dug into them, I discovered that what was inside wasn't what I would consider vegan chorizo. It was a black bean chipotle burger split into three small soft tacos that included raw cabbage and pico, with chipotle aioli (which I really hope was vegan, but I had it on the side just to be safe). It tasted fine, but really wasn't what I had expected to get. If I wanted a bean burger, I would have ordered a bean burger. The cost was also an issue - $11 for three small "tacos" seemed rather high. But, the meals come with free iced tea, so that's good.
I'm sure I'll be back again to try other vegan options, but my first visit was somewhat of a disappointment. The service was outstanding, and the other items I saw being delivered to diners looked great - especially the salads. I just won't be getting the tacos again unless they change the ingredients to match the description.
