  • We just bought a house and went to Star Nursery for our fruit trees. Very helpful even went out of their way to bring in a Fuyu Persimmon Tree when they ran out. The reason for three stars is that one of the workers insisted that i buy and add a granular starter fertilizer to the soil when planting my bare root trees. I found out the hard way that you never add a granular fertilizer to the soil when planting a tree. It burns the fine hairs on the roots and either kills the tree or the tree goes into shock. I was told that Star is the experts in desert plantings, i lost a 150 dollar Lychee tree, i almost lost a 110 dollar Mandarin tree and a 120 three in one plum tree. i may still lose the Persimmon. I called and talked to the big online nurseries where i purchased the other trees and they where shocked that i was advised to add fertilizer to the soil when i planted the trees. Before that persimmon came in i had planted a Apricot, Asian Pear, two Jujubes and a Fig the right way with no fertilizer added to the soil and all are growing and doing fine. When i went back to Star and talked to the manager it was very obvious that he was new to the concept of adding fertilizer to the soil at planting and said that the other nurseries dont know anything about planting in the desert. DO NOT BUY STAR"S STARTER FERTILIZER.
