The West Side Market has that old time ambiance while being 21 century relevant. With all the great reviews and press the WSM receives (internet articles, travel mags and cooking shows) it is difficult to write something new and unique - So I'll give you some of my tips for visiting the markets.
My top five tips as follows:
1. Show up hungry - first you'll buy more food to take home and secondly there are some tasty thing to eat while shopping (brats, gyro's, crepes and a attached diner).
2. Talk to the vendors - they know thier products and are happy to give you ideas on how to prepare them. Never made goat - ask the guys selling goat.
3. Prepare before going - wear good walking shoes and bring some reusable grocery bags. Your going do some walking and there is a lot to buy.
4. Cash and charge cards - most all vendors take charge cards except a very few. Nice to have some cash on hand for some purchases (brat sandwich or small purchase).
5. Be a tourist and a regular- look around and discover something you have not seen before at the market and try it. Also find a few vendors you like and be a regular. They'll appreciate your business and take care you.
Go to the West Side Market - get some of the foods that your grandmother made for you (pierogi, kielbasa, octopus, enchiladas). Get you favorite cooking book out and buy the ingredients for a evening supper. Have a brat and people watch. Enjoy the Cleveland classic destination and buy something yummy!
