  • River Park and Sandy Beach. I've been recreating in this park for over 40 years. The views of downtown are still spectacular, especially for Stampede fireworks. Since sometime in the mid-nineties, the park has become an unofficial dog park, more specifically an off-leash dog park. This, in my opinion, has ruined the park. Well, more than just my opinion: the fence along the edge of both sides of the park (both sides of the river) is to minimize the erosion caused by dogs running over the edge when it's wet. This never existed before the nineties; and the fenced off area, and new on-leash area, in the northern section of the park is to minimize dog waste from entering in the small tributary of the Elbow River. This is the reason Sandy Beach is on-leash only. I'm glad dogs have a place to run free, but many guardians have no interest in keeping them under control. We have been jumped on and snipped at by dogs repeatedly, one whose owner casually walked up to us (adults and kids) and told us to be careful, because her dogs don't like kids. WTF?! This is still a public park people, a park for humans as well as off-leash dogs. Also, if you pick up, how about disposing of it too, in a garbage can? It is now difficult to enjoy the park without being jumped on, run into, or otherwise molested by a dog. Too bad.
