| - I've now eaten at Bragg's twice in less than a month, and I can't wait to go back again soon. I was living in Australia when they opened, and one of the things I was most excited to return to Phoenix for (besides our lovely summer weather, of course) was to try out this place! Phoenix desperately needs more vegetarian/vegan places, and Bragg's is a fantastic addition.
Yes, it's in a part of town that isn't terribly nice (it's just a bit too far west to qualify as part of the hip downtown area), but the building itself is airy, well-lit, and very clean (including the bathrooms-I'm a huge stickler for clean and well-stocked bathrooms at restaurants). It's not a huge place, but I haven't had to wait either time I've gone (around mid-day on Sunday and Friday).
Their food is AWESOME and cheap! I think everything is less than $10, and the portions are large and include a side, at least for the breakfast dishes. The first time I went I had the Classic ($7), which is eggs or tofu with pesto, spinach, and tomato, with a side of fresh fruit. The Classic itself was very good and seemed to be made with fresh, high-quality ingredients, even if it wasn't anything unusual. As other Yelpers have mentioned, the fresh fruit side is awesome! Fruit sides can often be just meh with lackluster fruit and little variety, but this one is delicious, fresh, and had a good variety of fruit.
The second time I went, I got the What the Waff?!, which is a coconut-curry waffle ($7). YOU MUST TRY THIS WAFFLE! I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but it is unbelievably good. The waffle has a great texture, and the coconut-curry flavor is out of this world. Seriously, everyone needs to try these. I also got the eggplant bacon side, which is delicious! No, the texture isn't like bacon, but they really nailed the smoky, savory, salty flavor of bacon (at least from what I remember of bacon-I haven't eaten any for about 15 years now, but have had lots of veggie bacon).
My boyfriend got the Bwiscuits and Gwavy ($8) both times we went. He loved it! I thought it was decent, but I'm really not a big fan of biscuits and gravy in general. It's an enormous portion, so come hungry if you order this!
The servers are extremely friendly and cheerful, if perhaps slightly absent-minded. For example, the first time we came, our server forgot to bring my boyfriend his coffee. It was on the bill, but the server took it off when we pointed out that we'd never received the coffee, and apologized profusely. We had the same server the second time we came, and he did remember to bring us the coffee this time, and didn't charge us for it-we're not sure if he remembered the first time we visited and comped it intentionally, in which case, I would actually be very impressed by his memory and customer service! Either way, the service is great.
I haven't tried any of their pies or other baked goods yet, as I've been too full to do so both times I've come here. I look forward to doing so, though!
My only "gripe" (if you can even call it that) is that they're only open until 2 pm right now. However, my understanding is that they're looking to stay open later (maybe even 24 hours) down the road. So...all of you reading this should go to Bragg's so that they're successful enough to expand their hours! Seriously, go get that waffle. You won't regret it.
