  • I was coming back from Memorial Day weekend near Madison WI when my LR 3 over heated and engine light went on. I believed it to be the thermostat. I had the car towed for $250 to the Field's Madison Land Rover where I left it, cabbed to the airport and rented a car to return to Chicago. The next day the service manager called to tell me what I had told him that it was probably a broken thermostat. He said it would cost about $700. I said do it. The next day I drove back to Madison returned the car and cabbed it to Fields. The service manager couldn't have been nicer. I paid the $700 and drove the 2.5 hours back to Chicago. The next day the engine light went on and a dummy light said low coolant level. I called Field's Madison Land Rover and they said take the car to the Winnetka Land Rover and they would handle it. Well it was Friday so they couldn't take me till following Monday. Unfortunately I had planned to take a bunch of graduating HS seniors on a canoe trip that weekend but with the engine light on we postponed this trip to the following weekend. On Monday I took the car to Field's Winnetka where the service manager told me the coolant reservoir needed to be replaced. And that he couldn't help me until the end of the week when I was was going to be out of town. The soonest they could help me was next Monday, a week later. This would have been two weeks from the time I went in with an engine light on in the first place. I was advised by the service manager to not drive the car this coming weekend to take the graduates on their trip. I have been out over $1000 and the problem is still not fixed. And worse than that I have had to cancel a graduation trip twice. My car is not drive-able and it's a whole another week before they can even "access" the problem. This is typical of dealer's and their service departments. Find a good mechanic and chances are they will tell you the same horror stories coming from customers who have been ripped off and inconvenienced. Stay away from Field's
