BAD experience with Oliver & Henry's grooming service today! Wish I'd checked reviews on other (Yellow Pages online) sites. We called last week on Thursday and made an appointment for Tuesday (today) at noon. We explained that our Goldendoodle is four months old and very large for his age & had never been groomed. We were concerned about him being handled gently. She told me it would be $45 flat rate since he was a puppy and assured me they would take good care of him. Yesterday afternoon we got a call from the owner asking if we could move the appointment to Wed/Thurs/Fri because the groomer called off. I explained that we chose Tuesday because those other days wouldn't work for us this week. I apologized for not being able to accommodate the move to another day this week but I just couldn't work it out. When she said we'd just have to wait then until next week, I thanked her but said we would go to our vet's groomer where we originally planned to go before getting a recommendation to try them. We only decided to try them because they're closer and quoted a cheaper price (which they did not honor) and because an acquaintance recommended them. When we said we would go elsewhere she was clearly angry/frustrated. She said to give her a chance to "call around" and see what she could do to still groom him Tuesday. She called back and asked if we could move the appointment time to 9 a.m. instead of noon. (Sigh ... ). We wanted to have our dog groomed Tuesday so we agreed despite the fact that it made our morning a stressful mess. We explained that we'd be closer to 9:30 since we had to drop our daughter at school at 9; she said that was fine and not to rush. At 9:12 the groomer called my cell to ask where our dog was! Huh?! We were wholly underwhelmed with the condition of the establishment. She said it's under construction but we saw no sign of that. They've been there for 5 years. It sounds like only the retail side will get spruced up when it's the grooming area that needs it. The groomer they called in for us was unfriendly and flip to the point of almost being rude and made us uncomfortable. She seemed irritated with our brief/few questions. She was not very friendly with our puppy. She asked how long we wanted his hair. I said I did not want it too short. She warned that we'd only be back in 4 weeks if it was left too long. We agreed on "well over a half inch" per her words. She assured me it would still be long. I asked if could stay and watch for a while to see how he did because he's never been groomed before. She looked annoyed and made it clear that I was in no way welcome to stay. I should have left right then -- what a warning sign. She said, "Well ... I'm just going to put him in the tub ... so... " and stared at us. Always follow gut instinct folks -- I should have left right then. I was worried sick the whole time they had him and a good groomer wouldn't have made me feel ill at ease. When I returned after they called us, three hours later, I found my fear was warranted. We were made to pay for him before we even got to see him. They charged us $55 with no explaination for why it was $10 more than what we agreed to on the phone. Then they got our poor puppy out of the beat-up, paint-chipped locker/cage he'd been kept in (he's never been in a cage in his life) and there was only FUZZ left!!!!!! His coat was gone -- it was just a short layer of frizz. They also cut his face square like a schnauzer -- he looked NOTHING AT ALL like a Goldendoole anymore! I couldn't believe my eyes. My expensive, beautiful dog was a frizzed out, ugly shnauzerdoodle! He was shaking & whimpering horribly. His eyes told the story of fear and whatever terrible experience he'd endured. He couldn't even bark for hours. I felt so beyond guilty. While we examined him the groomer stood downing a bag of peanuts in the grooming area & texting with her back turned to us nearly the entire time like she couldn't care less what we thought or if we had questions. So unprofessional. The owner took pictures of my puppy with her cell when she heard me saying to my husband that the cut was too short & didn't look like my dog anymore. I read another review today (after) saying she took pix of their dog after they cut him badly while trimming nails. I'm a lawyer so I recognized cover your butt when I see it & those cell pix were defensive in my book. Also, the owner went on about how much money we would save buying our food there because she gives half off the 6th bag and a free 12th bag & that nobody beats her. Wrong. Even with her discounts on the same size bags & brands, Amazon saves you nearly $50 a year -- delivered. I should have stuck with Polished Paws in Avon Lake where we had an appointment scheduled next week. The woman at Polished was so kind & explained in detail how they lovingly handle the new pups to be sure they have a good experience. We will never, ever go cheap/O&H again. Oh & didn't ask about his shots or health;scary
