Great the Mint is Uptown! Just another reason to stick around and hang out (#charlottesgotalot). Checked out the museum for free on Wednesdays 5-9pm... there is also yoga at 5:30 on Wednesdays. The building itself is immaculate... the museum store is at the ground level, but there are quite a few steps to make it to the regular entrance... there is an elevator as well.
You can see a Chihuly sculpture from the street and it's even more breathtaking and beautiful close up in the lobby. They've really set up the space for events and flexible exhibits. The huge open space where yoga is held probably is their main event space and it's super dramatic with a huge view of the uptown skyline and LED billboard outside (on the Becthler). The space is flanked by escalators... so moving people in this building is super easy (there are elevators too). I did get a little apprehensive riding the elevator down and having to look down into the cavernous space below (the large windows outside don't help either since they make you feel like you are super high up).
The American Art wing was super interesting... going from old to new... and I loved seeing works from Romeare Bearden displayed in a section.
Overall a great outing... I thought free Wednesdays would be more crowded, but it wasn't bad at all. They also do Wine Wednesdays in the museum store... I think that had a bigger pull too. Hey, I wouldn't mind sipping and buying cool things.... lots of great present ideas here for the museum and art lovers... also lots of creative toys for the little ones too.
