| - I stopped by Big Daddy's Donuts at about 7:15 a.m. on a Saturday, and tried several varieties of donuts. The shop is definitely out of another era with its decor, and traditional diner counter. The woman at the counter was friendly and helpful.
I was surprised that their plain cake donuts were already sold out just over an hour after they opened. I picked up a half dozen (about $5) and an apple fritter ($2.89). There are upcharges for fancy donuts, cinnamon rolls, etc. over standard fare.
Frosted cake donuts- They are completely soft (similar to Dunkin' Donuts cake donuts), and were rather moist, but they had an unusual aftertaste that I couldn't place. Because of the strange aftertaste, I would not recommend them.
Toasted coconut raised donut- The toasted coconut topping was crisp and flavorful, and the donut itself was pleasantly light and airy, but unfortunately, the donut itself was ultimately lacking in flavor department.
Glazed raised donut- A light, airy, smooth texture with a slightly sweet glaze. Overall, an average glazed donut.
Apple fritter- A light texture dough with a sweet, syrupy apple filling. While it is very large, it is nothing special, especially when you factor in the $2.89 price.
The store opens at 6 a.m., counter to what is listed on Yelp right now.
Sadly, I was underwhelmed by Big Daddy's Donuts. The cake donuts were not good, the apple fritter was middling, and the glazed donut and coconut donut were merely average. If you are in the area and in the mood for a donut, your "better" bet is to go to Better-Maid donuts, which is only a five-minute drive away.
