| - The Tipsy Cow is a restaurant with a packed bar in Madison serving up traditional Wisconsin pub fare, and offers a few vegetarian items on their menu. It was quite busy for a gloomy, rainy Friday night. My close friend and I were up in Madison visiting another friend, and ended up getting dinner with a few of his friends. I was enroute to a wedding in Wisconsin Dells, but figured I could spend the night hanging out in Madison.
The wait was about 30 minutes, and once we ordered, it took about 40 minutes to get our food. I ordered the tomato soup, the house salad, and the portobello sandwich. The soup was a thicker bisque that comes with cheese curds floating around inside. The cheese curds were a fun addition, but the soup tasted a bit Chef Boyardee like to me. And it was a very intense taste, more like a sauce than a soup. I ate it all, of course, fueled by the desire to consume as much delicious cheese in Wisconsin as possible. The house salad was kind of odd: the greens were super chopped up, as if the greens were meant to be a topping for something else. The salad was also topped with radishes and chunks of tomato. One of my friends ended up eating most of the salad. The sandwich was small, but it had a good combination of cheese, vegetables, and portobello on it. My friend ordered a grilled cheese, which came with some ridiculous sauce between the layers of cheese. It was quite surprising to take a bite and see the sauce squirt out. She ended up letting me eat it with my tomato soup, which was kind of her.
Overall, the visit to The Tipsy Cow was fun, but as a restaurant, it is not on the same level as The Great Dane, and not even close to The Old Fashioned.
