  • Just back from my first and last visit to Thai Cafe. The place has a utilitarian, yet pleasant, ambiance. The staff is nice enough, yet seemed uncomfortable both while we were being seated and throughout the meal. We were seated immediately after arriving and given menus that, curiously, were in three-ring binders. The server poured two waters and left us. And left us. And left us. We sat there for over 20 minutes before anyone took out order and there were perhaps five other parties in the restaurant, two of which were done eating. Someone finally took our order and we waited while several other parties who had come in after us were served their food. I HATE when that happens! It puts me off the entire meal. Just when I was going to get up and check the status of our order, the server brought my food. We waited maybe 10 minutes more for my companion's order. I felt kind of awkward sitting there waiting for him to get his food. I can't understand why my dish, the duck, would take less time to cook than his ground beef dish. My fiance ordered the stir-fried Thai basil beef ($10.95) and I had the spicy basil duck with green beans ($11.95). I tasted both meals and thought both were pretty bland. My duck dish consisted of a few pieces of stringy duck, a lot of limp duck skin, an entire bunch of scallions, some onion and three soggy pieces of basil, on the stalk yet. No green beans and nary a chili taste to be had on the entire plate. The beef dish was not much better but did have a pleasant fennel- like flavor. Oddly enough, while both dishes were supposed to have green beans, neither did. Is there a bean shortage in Chandler I don't know about? Both dishes were inundated with red bell peppers and served with mounds of white rice on the side. We left most of the meal on our plates although my finance' enjoyed it. (But what does he know. He's a guy.) I love you, honey! The tab with no drinks/dessert/tip came to $23. That seems overpriced as both entrees were rather small.
