| - We were looking for a casual place to go last night, after the game got let out. Everything around the stadium was packed, so a friend recommended that we come here. I was born in the U.K. (I've lived in the US for 29 years), so I'm always happy to go to an English pub for some grub!
I knew exactly what I'd get, because I always get chips & curry sauce whenever I go to an English pub, especially if it's the first time going to a new place. I was really shocked to not see chip's & curry sauce on their menu but I saw that chip's came with several of their entrees, so I figured that I could get a side of chips.
Our server (American Gal) comes up to our table and I asked her, do you not serve chips & curry? She said well I can do a side of chip's and a side of curry. I asked her, do you have actual chip shop curry sauce...I got a very puzzled look from her. The Mgr (American Guy) then comes to the table with a sample of their curry "sauce"...he brings me a sample of their actual Indian curry. I said never mind, I was looking for chips & curry sauce. He then proceeds to be extremely rude and starts telling me about how they're all different types of curry from all of the different regions of India and that the sample he brought me, is the curry that his cook (from India) makes.
I was really shocked that a Mgr of an English Pub literally had no idea what chip shop curry sauce is...I had to explain that there was nothing Indian about it! I mean, it's like managing an American restaurant in another country and not knowing what ranch is. In a very nice way I told him to look it up that night, just so he knew what I was talking about. If I wouldn't have been beyond hungry, I would have left at that point as he had a horrible attitude. I can't imagine that he's the owner and hopefully if the owner here is British, they can explain to their Mgr what curry sauce is! From looking on Yelp, I see that there's an Irish place in Phoenix called Rosie McCaffreys and they have chips & curry sauce on their menu. I've never been there to try it, but I'm guessing that this would be his chance to check it out and then maybe he'll feel bad (and silly) for how rude that he was to me.
Anyway, let's get past the curry sauce. We ordered the fish & chips, the fish was good and the chips were "proper" chips, not fries. It drives me crazy when restaurants list fish & chips on their menu, and they bring out fish & fries. The batter on the fish could be fluffier, but you still always get better fish & chips from a British Pub, than any high end restaurants that attempts to make it! Our server was great and I'm glad that she brought out salt & vinegar before our food arrived. The food was also piping hot, which every Brit appreciates!
The actual environment was not that nice but I can understand that as after all, it's a British Pub! I was thinking that it needed a little bit of a remodel, so I'm surprised to read on Yelp about how they've just remodeled it. The place has character though with lots of British flare, a menu with all of the main British entrees, lots of British beers & ciders and they even serve up a Sunday roast dinner. They have lots of TV's, so this will be a great spot to watch the World Cup games next year. They also have some events that take place in the week, with specials on their food.
If I take the rude Mgr out of last nights experience here, I'll give this place 3 stars. It does need a bit of an upgrade, but the food was good, service was not bad (like a lot of the reviews say it is) and the place has character. Seeing that I've just moved to AZ from CA, I'm happy to have found a British pub.
