| - Just Better Air was sent out to my home through Choice Warranty yesterday. It was determined that the pvc drain pipe coming out from my blower in the attic was clogged and began filling the pan beneath it. The technician advised me that they not only no longer use this type of pvc configuration, but he would not be able to adequately unclog the existing PVC pipe or it was highly unlikely that he could even unclog it at all. He advised me that I needed a brand new replacement. Mind you, this was before he even disassembled anything. He then proceeded to tell me that it was not covered under warranty because it is a maintenance issue. Having spent the better part of the afternoon the prior day in the attic sucking out water from the drip pan, I knew exactly what he was looking at. He claimed that it would cost me $150 in addition to my deductible of $45. I nearly lost my mind. He added that some companies will charge as much as $200. I guess I was supposed to feel like I was getting a deal. I told him at that point that I could run down to Home Depot and buy the damn pieces for under $20. That's when he advised me of two things. He was going to document on his paperwork to my insurance company that I stated I would do the work myself, which meant I would lose my warranty on the unit. He cited an example of another client who had to pay $2000 for a compressor because his claim was declined. Apparently, the fact that this client was not a licensed contractor compromised his warranty. While I can understand the logic in his story, the example was to make me fearful. . . it was more about pressuring me into an additional $150 above and beyond the deductible. I felt pretty screwed. If I didn't let him do the work, he state he would document that I did the work myself. So. . . I could have asked my neighbor next door, who's a licensed contractor to do the work and it wouldn't have mattered. I even brought that up, but his position was that he heard me say I could do it myself and he would document it. I should have told him to go to hell and that I'll present a receipt if the need ever arose, but I was caught off guard. So, I sucked it up and wrote the check.
Today I contacted Choice Warranty to share my story with them. Two things they said to me sent me over the edge. One, the tech should have called the warranty company while he was on site, which he didn't. . .and they would have worked with me on the claim. Two, he had no business telling me my entire unit would no longer be covered under warranty. There was no misunderstanding here and the client story just added more punch. I still have a request for a new drain pan that has worn through over the course of 20 years and I have no idea where that's going. I do know that he's not interested in coming back in the afternoon because it's too hot so if the other guy hasn't quit by then, he may not be back. I am beyond angry.
What really troubles me is that I'm not the only person with complaints about this company and it is Choice Warranty who put them in my home. The vetting process is a big question of concern for me. I may be paying less for their services than what I was paying for One Guard, but I never had a single complaint about that company other than their fees kept going up and I was priced out of the plan. I'm beginning to wonder if it was worth the switch. This was my first call to Choice Warranty.
I got scammed. Plain and simple. It was a high pressure, threatening, fear tactic that intimidated me into agreeing to pay Just Better Air an exorbitant amount of money for a piece of PVC I could have replaced in 5 minutes. Some might call it a form of extortion. . . it certainly feels that way.
