  • When in doubt, go to the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Not every time will there be a happy ending - after all, they can't work miracles - but you can rest assured that you're visiting the very best veterinary facility for the care and treatment of your pet. Your local vet can make a referral, putting you in touch with the appropriate department and actually making the appointment for you. Think of your vet's willingness to make a referral as an index of the care and concern that he/she shows for your pet. If your local vet doesn't seem interested in helping your pet get further care at the U of I Vet Hospital, maybe it's time to find a new veterinarian... Emergency care is available seven days a week, twenty fours hours a day, 365 days a year, and no appointment is necessary. You simply walk in the door and tell the staff, "I'm here on an emergency visit." Within minutes you'll be checked in and receiving attention. Be prepared. This medical care is pricey. That said, as soon as the professionals have an understanding of your pet's needs, they discuss in detail the prospective costs and associated expenses. The decision to continue is entirely up to you. Never have we been blind-sided by a large bill that hadn't been explained to us beforehand. A veterinary student, acting under the guidance of a licensed, practicing instructor veterinarian, will take charge of your case. It's the vet student's responsibility to provide one-on-one care to your pet from start to finish. The students have always been very skilled and very attentive and we like knowing that they are giving their full attention to our pet's care. To us this is a huge benefit of the care offered here. Timeliness is another benefit. Because this is a fully equipped, fully staffed hospital, any associated tests or procedures can be done right away. There's no sending a test sample to some lab far away and waiting a week to learn the results. Any question that comes up can be investigated fully and answered right away. Remember to be realistic. Often a trip to the Vet Teaching Hospital is a "last stop" when every other treatment has failed. Under such circumstances it's mighty hard for even a skilled staff like this to come up with a successful treatment. Try to visit this facility early enough in your pet's period of health trouble that you give the staff a reasonable chance to perform their good work. When in doubt, just go!
