| - This was one of the worst birthday dinner experiences ever. It was one of my friend's birthdays yesterday and by the end of the meal our group were just trying to get out of this place.
We had a 7 o'clock reservation, and we sat down at 7:15. Then we were there for two and a half hours, not because we enjoyed staying there, but because our food took that long.
We started with the sangria, which was decent.
Then we got Zucchini Frites. All six of us thought they were disgustingly salty and couldn't finish them. We had ordered one serving and the waiter brought out two plates of fries. We thought maybe we were just getting common sense and that he split the dish so that everyone at the table could reach them with ease. We wanted to make sure we weren't being charged for two orders so the second time we saw him we asked him if he had split the order or gave us two orders. He said he gave us two orders and we told him we ordered only one of those and two orders of the Baked Goat Cheese. He hesitantly said he'd take one order of Zucchini Frites off our bill.
A while later we got one order of Baked Goat Cheese.
Then a while later we got another one which told us that he had mixed up the orders of one Zucchini Frites and two Baked Goat Cheeses. The baked Goat Cheese was good.
-Spanish tortilla- a cold quiche which no one really enjoyed
-beef Empanada and chicken Empanada - no one really commented
-stuffed Flatbread - good
-Sea Scallops - okay
-Braised Short Ribs - friends said it was good
Over the two and a half hours, our waiter never refilled our drinks although our wine and water glasses were all empty. During the last hour, I asked him for water three times whenever I saw him and I still never got water. Even though he only brought out one dish at a time, he never brought water. He also never stopped by in between bringing our food. I finally got up and went to the bar and waited for 10 minutes as I could see the one bartender was busy and then I asked him to give me some water.
We got the bill and the waiter had added his mistaken order of additional Zucchini Frites. 18% gratuity was also added. Not only was the food subpar, we didn't get any service. A child could have given us our food. It took a very long time between every single dish and the waiter never checked up on us in between.
The friend who suggested going there for a nice birthday dinner apologized to us for the awful experience and got up to tell a guy at the register that considering the service we received, we didn't think the added gratuity amount was agreeable. He said okay. A few minutes later, our waiter came to our table and asked "You guys did finish the zucchini fries right?" We promptly told him that we did not because they were gross. But we didn't understand why he would even ask that. It was his mistake for bringing out two orders and we told him right away that we had not asked for two orders. That was extremely petty of him.
Mind you, we did leave a more than deserved tip. But we were not going to leave a full 18% for a bill that high considering how much we ordered and the awful service. We also saw a couple other groups around us leaving and new groups being seated. We thought maybe due to added gratuity for a six-person table, our waiter didn't care or they were understaffed.
Not only does Icon receive broadway audience patrons since it's located next to the Overture, but it was also graduation weekend, so none of us could understand why they were understaffed. I've experienced responsible restaurants turning my party or other customers away because they were under staffed despite empty tables. Now I appreciate them even more since I understand that they were being responsible and just wanted to give us a decent level of service. Icon has to get its priorities straight. It seems to be all frills.
