I really really like the cupcakes and frosting from LaBella, but recently have been disappointed. I know business is down and the husband and wife team are cutting hours to try to conserve. They are now only open Wed evenings from 5-9 p.m.; Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. They shoud reconsider being open on Sundays since they are a huge day for bakeries.
I was in this past Saturday and was told (possibly inadvertently) that the cupcakes were made 2 days earlier. OK, great, I thought. I know sometimes bakers make wedding cakes ahead of time and freeze them and they are perfectly fine. My cupcake however was not. It was slightly dry and crumbly. If I'm going to purchase 2 day old cupcakes then that should be disclosed and I shouldn't be charged full price. The website states, "We believe in baking fresh cupcakes & buttercream every morning, never frozen. You'll taste & see the difference after one bite." So, maybe mine weren't frozen but they definitely weren't baked that day.
I understand when unexpected things happen but it seems to impact the business more than it should. I sincerely doubt the storefront will be open in a year, which is too bad.
UPDATE - 8/1/12 - they will be closed for all of August and then September 1st only doing online ordering and delivery . . . . . . .
