| - This is more a 3.5 star kinda rating, because it's not entirely mediocre but also not somewhere to rave about. It's an adequate gym in a very useful downtown location though, which keeps me happy enough.
I go during peak times (5 - 7pm) and haven't had issue with how busy it gets.
Time for a breakdown!
*Facilities
- Change rooms are quite large with plenty of lockers. Steam & cool rooms on offer; never had to wait for a shower. Plenty of counter space and hairdryers. (I can't speak for the men's change rooms though!)
- There's a few computer terminals for free Internet use, but almost always a wait for those. Handy if you need them!
- Plenty of couches in the lobby and a few in the change room too.
* Equipment
- Loads of cardio machines: cross trainers, bikes, stair machines, treadmills. I don't think in all the months i've been going that i've not been able to grab time on one of these.
- Free weights area quite well stocked; usually about 95% dudes and 5% ladies, but i'm never put off by this
- A reasonable amount and variety of weight machines; while there are a few doubles, sometimes I do have to wait for the machine I want, but some people don't mind sharing. A bit better ratio at maybe 75% dudes and 25% ladies.
* Space
- 2 yoga studios, 1 spin studio and a general group exercise studio that sees the most action. All classes are included in your monthly fee.
- If there's no classes you're free to use the rooms, which is awesome
- Some stretching area outside the group studio, and you can duck into that studio even when classes are going to grab a mat or exercise ball if you want to use it out there.
* Staff
- All reception staff are helpful and deal well with the busy stream of people coming in and out
- Membership staff are nice enough, but they do want to sell you something
- PT staff can be a bit standoffish if you're not their paying customer.
* Costs
- Monthly rate not too bad, and they offer a government discount for ministry staff. See if you can talk yourself into a month or two free also.
- I find the personal training costs to be prohibitive, even spread out over monthly payments; they make a VERY hard sell on this, but if you don't want it, make sure you are clear on that. It isn't a term of membership at all.
If you want a walkthrough, or a free trial, they're often offering an open house or 7 day trials, so it's worth dropping in to try before you buy. This is a big downtown gym with reasonable facilities, but not too much character - however, it ticks most of the boxes necessary for a regular visitor with varied needs (cardio, weights, group fitness) like me.
