| - Don't let the talk of a "speakeasy" fool you--this is just a nightclub. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that! The space is very nice and the presentation of everything is cool. But telling people, "oh, you need a password to get in!" doesn't make it a speakeasy.
I went there earlier one night, as I knew I didn't want too much of a "club experience", but I did want to start the night off with some good drinks there. I asked the bartender for a drink menu. He told me they didn't have one. So I asked what types of signature drinks they had (this is a speakeasy, right?). He told me they didn't have any. I felt very put off by the attitude of the bartender, especially when there was basically no one there. I sort of panicked and ordered a Cosmopolitan (I was at a cocktail bar and wanted something in a martini glass!). The drink was fine, but between that and my fiancé's two bottled beers, our bill was around $30. Don't charge me Velvet Tango Room prices and provide me with West 6th drinks and service.
Like I said, the place is nice. But the prices are outrageous for what you're given, and it's not the experience I expected. I knew it would be certainly more clubby than VTR or somewhere like Society Lounge, but if I'm spending $15 on a drink I need an experience to go with that, especially when I come to find they supposedly DO have signature drinks and possibly even (gasp!) menus. Hire people willing to provide that experience.
