| - ***The Westin Charlotte has a great location in Downtown Charlotte (within walking distance to so many key Charlotte attractions) and the hotel is contemporary and comfortable***
While I mostly stay at Marriott hotels, Westin hotels (of Starwood) are nice and typically more contemporary than Marriotts. Westin hotels are also known for their comfortable beds though I personally do not notice much of a difference compared to Marriotts. The Westin in Downtown Charlotte definitely delivered on Westin's contemporary image and comfortable rooms.
The rooms are not incredibly modern, but they are contemporary and have a simple and good neutral color scheme. The design is definitely a notch above a lot of Marriotts that often feature an unappealing color scheme and ugly carpets. The bed at this Westin was comfortable--excellent linen too and a comfortable room temperature. The bathroom had a great look and featured a rainfall showerhead. While I do not have status with Starwood, I did like the nice touch of two complimentary bottles of water with each night (it seems every Starwood member, even non-elite members, enjoy this benefit).
This Westin also has a great location. It is right on College, which leads to several Downtown Charlotte restaurants and even some of Charlotte's nightlife like a dance club and a dueling piano bar. This Westin is also within walking distance to several key Charlotte attractions including a minor league baseball stadium, the Carolina Panthers (NFL) stadium, the Charlotte Bobcats (NBA) arena, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
The fitness center was big and had several machines.
The lobby was nice too. It was spacious and there were several sitting areas if you are waiting for someone.
I tried a little bit of their catering for a nightly event in their restaurant as well as in one of their banquet rooms for breakfast. The food was definitely subpar for a Westin. A lot of it was due to poor preparation and the effects of having buffet style food as the scrambled eggs were not that fluffy, the waffles were very soft and the flatbread was limp (it had definitely been sitting around for too long).
Service throughout the hotel was friendly though I felt that housekeeping was a tad slow to service my room on some days.
Prices are high, but the hotel is nice and the location is very convenient.
For travelers looking to explore Downtown Charlotte, this Westin is a great option. The rooms are nice and the location is near perfect. Downtown Charlotte is not my favorite downtown city. It is a tad sleepy though not as quiet as Phoenix or as small as San Jose. However, if you need to be in Downtown Charlotte, this Westin is a good hotel for a short or long stay.
Pay valet and self parking are both offered by this Westin. It is easy finding a spot with self parking.
